My favorite Provisional cast on, is the crochet cast on.
It is worked by crocheting a chain of stitches – a bit longer than the number of stitches you need to cast on. Use a slick waste yarn for the crochet chain. I like to make a knot in the yarn, when I get to the end of the crochet chain. -This helps me identify the place to start, when I need to unravel the crochet chain.
Then turn the chain to the back side – and see the bumps: Put your knitting needle through a bump and wrap the yarn you are knitting with, around your knitting needle to pick up a stitch.
Continue until you have the appropriate number of stitches.
When stitches are picked up; start knitting!
Unravel the crochet chain to pick up the stitches for going in the other direction. This is where the knot helps you: You have to start unravelling, where the crochet chain ended.

Jeg bruger gerne en hæklet luftmaske-snor til at starte et åbent opslag.
Du skal bruge et glat hjælpegarn ( f.eks. bomuld ) til at lave din luftmaske-snor. Lav lidt flere luftmasker end du skal bruge. Når du kommer til enden af luftmaske-snoren, så bind en knude på garnet. Dette er en hjælp, når du skal trævle luftmaske-snoren op igen.
Vend luftmaske-snoren til bagside og se de små bump: Stik din strikkepind gennem et af disse bump, slå det garn du skal strikke med omkring pinden og træk gennem bumpet, så du får en maske på din strikkepind.
Fortsæt indtil du har det antal masker, du skal bruge på pinden.
Begynd så at strikke.
Når du bruge maskerne i det åbne opslag igen, skal du trævle din luftmaske-snor op igen. Her hjælper knuden dig: Du skal starte med at trævle op fra den ende, hvor knuden er ( altså hvor du sluttede din luftmaske-snor ). Efterhånden som du trævler op, sætter du maskerne på en strikkepind og så er du klar til at strikke igen.
